Local Ads, Plain English

Facebook vs Instagram for local businesses in Morris County. Where your customers actually are.

Kristine · SPARK · Morris County, NJ · October 16, 2026 · About a 5 minute read

Owners often ask me whether they should be on Facebook or Instagram. The good news: Meta runs both, and one campaign can show ads on either. The better question is where your ads should show, and what they should look like there.

How the two feel different

  1. 01

    Facebook

Tends to reach an older, established local crowd: homeowners, parents, people who read local groups and community pages. Great for services people plan for.

  2. 02

    Instagram

Tends to skew younger and more visual. Great for anything people want to see before they buy: food, fitness, beauty, design, anything with a before and after.

Why you usually want both

For most local businesses, I let Meta place ads on both and watch where the actual calls and bookings come from. The data tells you quickly. Forcing one platform early often means paying more for the same customer.

What changes is the creative. A vertical video that works in Instagram Stories may need a different version in the Facebook feed.

A quick way to decide

Think about your best three customers from last year. Where do they spend time on their phone? If you're not sure, ask them. Then start with both platforms, measure real results for a few weeks, and shift budget toward whatever brings in paying customers.
